The relationship between socio-economic status (SES) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) wasexamined using nationally-representative data from 3 countries (USA, Thailand and Australia).Individual data were obtained for participants aged 35 years or above from the NHANES III,InterASIA and AusDiab I studies. We examined the association between CKD prevalence (GFR <60ml/min/1.73 m) and education, income, employment and area of residence (urban/rural). Householdincome below national median, below-average education, being unemployed/retired and living in ruralsettings were associated with increased odds of CKD (INSERT RESULTS). Lower SES wasconsistently associated with higher rates of CKD across different ethnic groups, however somevariation in effect size was observed (INSERT RESULTS). Income, employment and education areassociated with CKD risk, however the effects vary between different population groups and thisrequires further exploration. Our results suggest CKD prevention and management strategies shouldtake account of the higher prevalence in low-income and poorly educated groups.
